Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

After 20+ years as a Food Service Senior Buyer, I decided to create Hey Puppy, as a way to raise money for the Orphanage and Dog rescue organizations I have been supporting for many years. Hey Puppy is my celebration of my two passions, pet care and my culture, I am Mexicana who grew up though in LA. My pups and I currently live in DTLA, in a work/live loft.  This is where Hey Puppy's headquarters is located!

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

As I walked my dogs through the city, I noticed how everyone with pups greets one another. We don’t greet the human, we greet the pet. Nine times out of ten it’s with “hey puppy!”

What is your signature style / item? How did it become so?

Eclectic and passionate.
My pieces have three requirements; top notch quality, functional, and beautiful.
As the eldest of two sisters, who were raised by a single immigrant mother, I have known responsibility and accountability from a young age.
Our family's matriarch, the late Mami Chayo my maternal grandmother, strongly believed that having a clean home is as important as attending confession and mass, which we did weekly. She also believed and often said, "If you are going to do something, do it right!"
As I have grown into my own, I've retained those beliefs along with my shameless love for dogs, mine and those who need help.  I have been fortunate with the ability to travel the world which has given me new appreciation for my birthplace’s artistry.  Being able to marry the two, while keeping a close eye on the quality and esthetic, are my great joy.

What makes your business unique to the industry?

Hey Puppy's accessories are all designed by me, Claudia.
The creative process always begins with the functionality and I work directly with the artisans, through Mexico. Lastly all of our pieces are made by hand. None of the my accessories are made in China or bought by bulk at open markets.

What's been your biggest roadblock when it comes to business and how have you been able to overcome?

I find it challenging at times with a few customers, who because the pieces are made in Mexico and are made for pets, to appreciate the artistry of my pieces and pay for them.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

Seeing a photo of a dog, cat, or buddy wearing one of my pieces.  Whenever I give over a piece, I do so with gratitude, love, and positive vibes.

What is your *must do* local activity?

Outdoor music events, whether it's an event at the Levitt, Grand Performances, Pershing Square, or Hollywood Bowl.
