Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

Melissa: Sweet Treats By Melissa

Hi! My name is Melissa Megliola and I am the owner of Sweet Treats by Melissa. I make custom cookies for events big and small. I am always so honored to be a small, sweet part of people’s special events. I also make Italian style cookies and cookie platters from recipes passed down to me from my Grandma.

What is your signature style / item? How did it become so?

My cookies tend to be very brightly colored. I love that big, bold pop of color on each one!

What makes your business unique to the industry?

While I make cookies for all different types of events, the cookies I make for kids are my favorite. Kids always have such fun ideas, and tying cookie designs together for their themes is always so much fun.

What's been your biggest roadblock when it comes to business and how have you been able to overcome?

The biggest roadblock is creating a solid following for my business. Word of mouth is wonderful, but you always have to go beyond that to expand. Different types of markets and meeting lots of people at the markets have been a wonderful way to expand my customer base. Local markets are SO much fun and I’m so fortunate to have found a few that really hit that sweet spot for me.

How has your business had to adapt amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic? What are you doing to navigate the situation?

Covid has been tough. My cookies are usually made for special events that have lots of people coming together to celebrate, and right now there aren’t a whole lot of those happening. However, because things have slowed down, it has allowed me to focus on adapting to online homeschooling with my kids. I am grateful to be able to dedicate my time and attention to them, while also teaching them how to bake lots of new things. It has inspired me to consider offering new types of baked goods at future markets and holidays!

What is your favorite part of what you do?

I have two favorite parts (don’t make me pick just one!!) My first favorite part is seeing the looks on my customers faces when they see their cookies for the first time at pickup - especially the kids. They always get so excited and I LOVE seeing their big smiles! My second favorite part is seeing the recipes my grandma made passed down to my girls. I’m so proud to see a 4th generation make the same cookies as my grandma, and to see the joy my girls have when making them.

What is your *must do* local activity?

My favorite local activity is going to the Baker Neighborhood and walking up and down Broadway. There are so many funky shops, unique gifts, yummy restaurants, and a bar for any mood you’re in, all in one spot! I have spent many hours checking each place out and it’s my favorite place for holiday and birthday shopping. My favorite shops include Hope Tank, Decade, and Sewn, but there are SO many more. My favorite places to eat are The Hornet, Postino, and Senor Burrito.
