Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:
Munir Jones: Expressions By Munir
I am a male Fiber artist, I learned how to weave in 1980 in Hermosa Beach Ca., I was taught what is called off the loom weaving at the time. I have put many twists on my designs I produce, making them all One of a kind designs using Driftwood and different kinds of woods I collect from the mountains. At this point I can actually say that nobody else creates what I do.
Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?
I chose to use my name because it is Unique, Munir means Radiant, so then I desired to go with Expressionsbymunir
What is your signature style / item? How did it become so?
I started out with a hoop, I am finding out most people like the style of what I call the Free Form style, this is when I make the loom using driftwood or mountain wood, like oak, manzanita or pine. I sculpture it to a form that is balanced to me and I weave on it. My background of sculpturing was taught to me by my High school teacher at Fremont high school and his name is Eugene Woods.
What makes your business unique to the industry?
Well there is not many male weavers and the style I do , no one else does.
What's been your biggest roadblock when it comes to business and how have you been able to overcome?
For me is getting my creations out there so people can see what I do. I feel last year was a great year for me, I was in the Lake Arrowheads Art and Wine Festival where by surprise I took 1st place in art, and then the Jackalope Indie Artisan Fair last August was a hit.
What is your favorite part of what you do?
I love out doing each piece and pushing myself to come up with something even better on the next piece .
What is your *must do* local activity?
I like to go out to any three of the Mexican restaurants up here, going to my favorite thrift store in Blu jay, or going to the lake and watching the boats, or just looking at our Beautiful lake.
