Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:
I’m Kaitlin Ziesmer! I’m a painter and illustrator living in Denver, Colorado. I make brightly colored, illustrative character pieces and custom work.
What is your signature style / item? How did it become so?
I approach my characters with a very "cut & paste" style. I have, what most would call, a very signature color palette; so with the combination of the two, I guess it's very "me".
What makes your business unique to the industry?
I think I just have a very different, or unique, way of looking at color and how that applies to forms; being animal or human. When people come to me for art, it is because they recognize and appreciate that I will make a piece that looks like it distinctly was created by me.
What's been your biggest roadblock when it comes to business and how have you been able to overcome?
Selling art is HARD. I think being diverse in how you approach it sets you up for surprises when it comes to the type of projects that fall in your lap. Plus, being open to different things and multiple streams of creative income helps with less burnout.
How has your business had to adapt amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic? What are you doing to navigate the situation?
Like most, I've been trying to sustain online. Another thing that has helped has been moving outside, or just bigger, and creating custom murals for people. Luckily COVID doesn't seem to affect that business too much.
What is your favorite part of what you do?
Getting to know other artists who are into the same grind. It's an awesome mutual appreciation that seems to happen. It takes a certain type of person to keep going at this, and it's cool to be able to appreciate other people's work that you know are working just as hard as you at it.
