Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

Originally from Philadelphia, Jillian moved to Phoenix in 2008 to major in ceramics at Arizona State University; where she fell in love with the heat and the sunsets and never looked back.

She loves sharing her passion and knowledge of sustainable living through this business; and spends her days making most of the pottery, answering your emails and doing all of the odds and ends that make the business run. When she’s not in the studio, Jillian is usually found outside soaking up the sun or experimenting with vegan baking.

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

In Ventnor City, New Jersey- right next to the famous Atlantic City- there is a quiet street where front doors are always open and neighbors gather on the porch to enjoy the ocean breeze. On Lafayette Avenue there was a small gray house with a red door. This is where the Schimmel family is from and it’s the heart, soul and inspiration behind this business.

What is your signature style / item? How did it become so?

Lafayette Avenue Ceramics' signature line is full of functional kitchen items in an array of nature-inspired colors. Best sellers include our Squeeze Cup, with its unique finger prints, and the Gold Cactus Mug which shows off our love of the Southwest.

What makes your business unique to the industry?

Lafayette Avenue Ceramics is so much more than just ceramics. Our values- Connect, Nourish, Sustain- impact everything we do.
Ever notice how family always gathers in the kitchen? It’s the community and bonding that happens when we cook together- a child learning from the adults, or the conversation that accompanies more tedious work. These small moments are what we all remember so fondly, so it's no wonder that so many of our traditions and celebrations include sharing food.

It was exactly this idea that started Lafayette Avenue Ceramics. Such beautiful food should be served on, and prepared with, the most beautiful dishes.

What is your *must do* local activity?

As a desert dweller for over 12 years, Jillian loves hiking and exploring this beautiful state. Favorite hiking spots include the South Kaibab trail of the Grand Canyon, Humphrey's Peak in Flagstaff and Piestewa Peak right in our backyard. The view from the top can't be beat!
