Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:
To put it simply: I’m a Minneapolis photographer with a mild obsession with Barbie. Influenced by imagery from the 50s and 60s, I create scenes with the dolls in studio that have a sense of whimsy mixed with a little sarcasm. To me, Barbie is a positive, strong and empowering figure and I try to utilize her to create conversation. And to answer your question, I only have around 40 dolls.
What is your signature style / item? How did it become so?
My style has a vintage/mid century vibe. I've been very influenced by design, movies, tv, and art from the 50's and 60s. Of course, Barbie came out in 1959, so she ties in perfectly!
What makes your business unique to the industry?
There are many photographers, but I believe I'm the only one in this region that specializes in Barbie photography.
What's been your biggest roadblock when it comes to business and how have you been able to overcome?
I think the biggest roadblock would be growing my audience. I've been trying to "up" my social media game, and I'm in the process of having an all new website created (with more personal features, like a blog).
How has your business had to adapt amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic? What are you doing to navigate the situation?
I have had to move to all online selling for now. It has meant trying to maintain a personal approach to selling art, without seeing the actual client in person. I've tried to do more social media interactions with people, follow up emails, donations etc. People like getting to know the artist, not just acquire the art.
What is your favorite part of what you do?
My favorite part is meeting people because of my art: Whether it's at an art fair, an art opening, the MN State Fair, you name it.
